What are normal Hip Functions

We all know this, hip is one of the largest joints in the human body. But, do we know how its actually function in our body?

Basically, the hip joint is Ball and Socket type of joint. The socket is made by acetabulum that is the cup-shaped hollow in the hipbone into which the head of the femur fits to form a ball-and-socket joint. And the ball is the femoral head, that is the upper end of the thigh bone(femur).

The bone surface of the ball and socket are embraced with articular cartilage, a smooth tissue that placed as a cushion at the end of the bones and makes bones to move freely.

Bands of tissue referred to as ligaments (the hip capsule) connect the ball to the socket and gives stability to the joint. A thin tissue that surrounds a hip joint called synovial membrane. The fluid in the space between joints known as synovial fluid provide nutrient to the joints and cartilage as well.

Causes of Hip nuisance

The usual reason for chronic hip pain is arthritis. In other words, arthritis referred, a disease-causing painful inflammation and stiffness of joints.

Following are some common form of hip joint arthritis are:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Traumatic Arthritis
  • Avascular necrosis of hip joint

Osteoarthritis

This type of arthritis referred as an age-related and wear and tear type of arthritis. It usually sees in people who attain or cross 50 years of age and individual who family having a history of arthritis. A person who is suffering from such arthritis suffered an intolerable pain.

In Osteoarthritis, the cartilage that acts as a cushion between the bones of the hips weared away. Further, after the absence of cartilage, the hip bones rub against each other and causing hip pain and stiffness.

Osteoarthritis may also be caused or accelerated by subtle irregularities in how hip formulated in childhood age.

Rheumatoid arthritis

This is an autoimmune disease in which the synovial membrane that surrounds hip joint become inflame and thick. This chronic inflammation can damage the cartilage and lead to pain and stiffness.

Rheumatoid arthritis is also termed as inflammatory polyarthritis and it is autoimmune disease.

Post-traumatic arthritis

This type of arthritis caused when cartilage got damage from hit joint by any kind of physical injury or fracture. This injury could be from sport, a vechile accident ,a normal fall, a military injury or any other source of physical trauma.

Such type of injuries damage the cartilage and the bone, alter the mechanics of joint and making it wear out more quickly.

Avascular necrosis

Due to some injury or unknown etiology to the hip, it limits the supply of blood to the femoral head, this situation known as avascular necrosis. This is also known as Osteonecrosis. The lack of blood or less supply of blood cause the surface of the bone to collapse and deformed and it will result in Arthritis.

Childhood hip disease

It seems in some infants or children have a hip problem. After going through every successful treatment during childhood, they still face pain of arthritis later in their life. This happens because their hip are not growing normal and joint surfaces are also affected.

Hip Replacement Surgery

It’s a surgical process in which a doctor surgically take out hip joint that is affected by arthritis and replaces it with an artificial hip joint that made from metal and other components.

This surgery usually recommends by a doctor when a patient not getting relief by every possible treatment. Hip replacement surgery gives you a relief from this painful hip joint and making your walk easier than before.

During Hip Replacement Surgery, the doctor first makes a cut on the side of the hip and move the muscles that connected to the top of thighbone to expose hip joint. Further, the ball portion of the hip joint is removed and replaced by an artificial joint that is attached to the thighbone using some special material.

After this, the doctor removes damage cartilage and attaches the replacement socket part to the hip bone. Then, new ball part of the thigh bone is then inserted into the socket part of the hip. In the end, the doctor attaches the muscle and close this incision. This whole procedure must be done by a surgeon who is highly skilled in such type of surgery.
